Injuries Happen.
You never want to be the bearer of bad news.
But sometimes, unfortunately, people need to know the truth.
Telling someone that they are going to get injured at some point no matter what they do is earth-shattering for many.
Their perfect bubble of naïve innocence explodes.
“Yup, you’re going to get injured.”
“But…..”
“It doesn’t matter. It’s going to happen.”
It’s like telling a child that Santa isn’t real.
You can see them processing the news. They go quiet and tilt their head slowly while a little piece of their world dies.
Nobody wants to get injured. Nobody sets out to intentionally hurt themselves.
But just like you’re going to get your heart broken, you’re probably going to lose a job, have a car accident, get sick, stub your toe, sometimes bad shit happens.
When you least expect it.
There isn’t a top-level athlete on the planet who hasn’t had to deal with being injured. You think they set out to put their multi-million dollar contracts in jeopardy for fun?
Despite the advancements in technology, progress in training, nutrition, drugs and recovery, injuries happen.
You can try your damnedest to avoid anything bad from ever happening to you.
You could lock yourself in a bubble far away from civilisation and never do anything, with anyone, ever again.
Sounds fun.
Or, you could live life and accept that sometimes things are going to suck.
At some point, after you’ve pushed your body beyond its limit, at that very moment, something bad might happen.
Might happen.
It might not happen either.
You might push your body beyond its limits and make yourself significantly better, by doing something you’ve never done before.
Of course, if you spend all your training focusing on not getting injured, you’ll probably never find out.
You’ll make no progress. You’ll never get stronger. You won't look any different. You won't be any better. You won't learn how to train around being hurt. You’ll stay exactly how you are.
But hey, at least you’ll never get injured.
I guess that's something.
