I Hate This Industry

I’ve been in the industry for a while. Certainly not as long as some, but longer than others. I’ve worked in different gyms. I’ve trained in many. I’ve been kicked out of a few. I’ve met so many people along the way and I’m happy to say that training has shaped me into the person that I am today.

I love training.

A wise man once said to me “never underestimate how your dedication to training flows through every aspect of life.” Some words stick with you over time. I constantly find myself going back to those and either being thankful that I was able to apply skills used in training to life, or being annoyed that I didn’t put in the effort like I do in the gym.

Unfortunately though, as much as training is my life and is something I will do until I physically cant do it any more, there are so many things that irritate me.

As anything grows and gains in popularity, along with the positives inevitably come negatives. Every day more and more people enter gyms for the first time bringing with them ideas and perceptions of what they are trying to do and how to act in order to fit into the lifestyle that is the fitness industry.

With people come trends. With trends come fads and with fads come annoyances. Some are short lived while others are longer lasting. I’ve always tried to keep my head down, do what I like and what makes me happy, but unfortunately in todays world of social media its hard to avoid everything that goes on around us.

Every now and then after a bad day or hearing something frustratingly retarded the anger boils over and just needs to be released. This blog is that release. It’s a rant!

Below is a list of things that piss me off.

After sitting quietly for a while and letting my temperature drop back to normal, I came to the conclusion: as much as I love training, I hate this industry.

I hate the hypocrisy of it. Yes I see the irony of what I do for a living and writing this blog.

I hate that everyone kisses everyone’s ass and then turns around and talks shit behind their back.

I hate that you can’t speak your mind and say that someone looks bad. It’s an opinion. Not everyone shares the same view.

I hate that you can’t say something is shit without being labeled a hater. No I'm not a hater. I just don't like it. Not everything is good.

I hate that all feedback must be positive.

I hate how everyone is “sponsored “ by supplement shops, but their deal is no different to the discount I could get if I just asked the person behind the counter.

I hate that people who don’t actually compete in anything are sponsored.

I hate the supplement industry and the bullshit lies they sell.

I really hate that idiots believe those lies. Use your head people!

I hate that people actually believe pro bodybuilders look that way because of taking BCAA's during their workouts.

I hate that it's more about your supplement stack and pre workouts than about how much weight you lift or how you train.

I hate that people train like shit.

I hate that people want to do below average training but seriously expect elite level results.

I hate commercial gyms.

I hate all the festival dickheads who claim it’s about aesthetics, but don’t train legs

I hate Zyzz, Chestbrah, Supaturk and any other idiot who follows the aesthetics crew. Even gay guys look at them and go “fags!”

I hate ALL people that don’t train legs. How do you ignore one half of your body?

I hate that the free weight section in gyms constantly shrinks while the cardio equipment and group classrooms continue to multiply.

I hate gym fashion.

I hate that it's about what retro Jordan's or Air Force 1’s you're wearing rather than how much you can squat.

I hate multi coloured fluro shoes.

I hate that wearing tight leggings is now acceptable regardless of how big your ass is.

I hate bright coloured clothing with moronic motivational slogans on them.

I hate that people take the same selfie every day and post it on Facebook / Instagram / Twitter and every other available social media site.

I hate that it's about posting motivational quotes to Facebook but no one does what the quote says.

I hate that “strong is the new sexy” yet most people are weak and don’t lift any weight.

I hate that girls all seem to look like ducks and fall over sideways when taking photos. Is this the proof that people really do have weak cores?

I hate that girls only take photos from one side and have a thousand pics of exactly the same pose, just with a different background.

I hate that guys all seem to have a permanent bicep flex whenever a camera is around. Why is everyone pointing at each other?

I hate comp prep coaches that take on any client regardless of how fat they are.  Then starve and destroy them to get on stage, where they still look fat.

I hate that there are 50 different people that can call themselves Mr. / Ms. state champ and yet only 2 or 3 of them are actually bodybuilders.

I hate that bodybuilding shows are made up primarily of non-bodybuilders.

I hate that you can be too muscular and too conditioned for some divisions.

I hate that stage condition for some divisions is what people should look like all the time.

I hate that natural shows aren’t really natural, and that natural in America means only slightly less drugs than drugged.

I hate people that run more drugs than the entire Mr. Olympia lineup, but still weigh 70kg, lift no weight and only have shoulders and arms…if they’re lucky.

I hate how it’s all about drugs and not training.

I hate that 90kg men think deadlifting 180kg is impressive.

I hate those women who still believe lifting a 5kg dumbbell will turn them into a muscle bound freak bodybuilder.

I hate those guys that “don’t want to get to big”

I hate how some people apparently have a huge friend who got there by eating and drinking what ever they like, yet when I see them the they’re fat and don’t even look like they train.

I hate that people take advice from people who don't have a good body about how to get a good body.

I hate that running around a park is now considered training.

I hate I.C.E training.

I hate TRX.

I hate Kosama.

I hate W.O.Ds.

I hate CrossFit.

I hate personal trainer courses that pump out one useless trainer after another because the course spends less than 5% of the time teaching people about training.

I hate how 18 year old personal trainers that have never trained a day in their lives are apparently qualified to teach people how to train.

I hate personal trainers that roam gym floors harassing any woman who tries to lift heavy.

I hate how people who don’t lift heavy seem to have the loudest opinions about how to lift heavy.

I hate that a spine must never bend during a deadlift. It’s designed to bend! That’s why it’s made up of discs. So it can bend! Now if your tibia bends…….

I hate form Nazis.

I hate that lifting straps are cheating but knee wraps are perfectly fine.

I hate that I have a list this long of things I hate

AGGHHHHHHHH!!! ENOUGH!

One might read all that and say “well if you hate everything, why are you still here?” And that is a valid question. However, I'm really not that much of a negative person. Don’t forget in the very beginning I said I love training. I also love what I do for a living. I cant imagine the horror of having to go back and work in a boring, sterile, politically correct, neutered environment like an office. I love that people can come to me and leave all that at the front door and just be themselves. They can yell, swear, grunt, sweat and let out the frustrations of the day. I love people who share my views and really love to train. People who truly live this lifestyle and not do it simply to justify eating like a hippo 90% of the time. It's not my fault there is so much garbage out there which can lead to someone hating so many things.

I know. I know. It’s me. I’m the problem. I really should start posting selfies, buy some fluro skins, order some Jordan 5’s and stack 16 different pre / intra and post workout powders. In my free time I need to find the best motivational quotes and post them online. #quoteoftheday #werd #motivation.

I need to fit in.

You know what? Fuck that. I’m going back to my cave to hide from the all the things I hate.
